Dutch Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won the sprint race at the British Grand Prix. Note that this is the debut of a new format in the history of the championship.

At the start of the sprint, the season leader passed the Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and retained the lead until the finish line. The seven-time world champion remained second, and the top-3 was closed by his team-mate – Finn Valtteri Bottas.

On the sixth lap, Red Bull racer Sergio Perez took off from the track. The Mexican managed to return to the trajectory at the end of the peloton and breakthrough only to 18th position, but the team decided to retire on the final 17th lap.

For getting into the top 3 in the sprint race, the pilots received additional points. The winner was credited with 3 points, for the second place – 2, for the third – 1. Thus, Verstappen’s advantage over Hamilton in the standings increased to 33 points. There was no official award ceremony at the end of the race, but after the mandatory weighing procedure, the winners were awarded laurel wreaths.
