22 years after its debut, the Czech brand presented the Škoda Fabia of the fourth generation of this hatchback. The car has grown almost to the size of a VW Golf IV of generation, the design echoes the Octavia liftback, and is based on the MQB-A0 platform as in the Volkswagen Polo, Audi A1, and Seat Ibiza.
The fourth-generation Škoda Fabia received a more voluminous design dominated by sharp edges. The headlights have become thinner, and they have LED already in the basic equipment, the radiator grille is enlarged and widened, the taillights are now two-section and can be equipped with LED elements for an additional charge. The shape of the stampings on the doors plays on the isosceles triangle on the Czech flag. The glass line is highlighted by a chrome contour, and the wide rear diffuser in high-end trims gives the car a dynamic and sporty look. In addition to full dyeing in one color, two-tone schemes will continue to be available.
The fourth-generation Škoda Fabia is built on the Volkswagen Group modular MQB-A0 platform. The Škoda Fabia of the fourth generation has become larger, but, as the developers say, it is almost not heavier: the length is 4 107 mm (+110 mm), the width is 1780 mm (+48 mm), and the wheelbase is 2564 mm (+94 mm). Thus, the new generation Fabia is only 42 mm shorter than the IV generation Volkswagen Golf. Wheels with a diameter of 14 to 18 inches will be available from the factory.
Aerodynamics optimized – Cd coefficient decreased from 0.32 to 0.28. This is due not only to the new body panels but also to the active flaps in the lower part of the radiator grille, which open in the direction of the electronics when increased airflow is required. According to the calculations of the designers, when driving at a speed of 120 km / h, these dampers can reduce fuel consumption by 0.2 liters for every 100 km of track.
The boot volume of the fourth-generation Škoda Fabia with the second-row seatbacks raised has increased by 50 liters – up to 380 liters. And with the rear row of seats folded down – from 1150 to 1190 liters.
It is noted that the fourth-generation Škoda Fabia interior has become noticeably more spacious. The hatchback was the first of the new generations of the brand to receive round side ventilation deflectors, while the central ones have a more familiar shape, but are now located under the display of the media system. Monitors with a diagonal of 6.5, 8.0, or 9.2 inches will be available for the model, depending on the equipment level. The top media system is complemented by a navigator, Internet access with eSIM technology, and is capable of being updated “over the air”.
In presentation photos, the fourth-generation Škoda Fabia showed a five-door in top-end equipment with a digital dashboard on a 10.25-inch screen. However, in simple configurations, there will be a conventional switch instrument with an onboard computer screen. The basic version provides six airbags and a stabilization system, and the list of additional options includes a heated steering wheel and windshield, panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control, and adaptive cruise control Travel Assist. It will also be possible to order an airbag for the driver’s knees and side airbags for the rear passengers.
Unlike Octavia, the microclimate is controlled through a separate unit with ordinary buttons and rotary knobs. The front passenger seat can have a folding backrest and ISOFIX mountings. In total, 43 solutions from the Simply Clever series are available for the model. For example, a USB-C connector in the ceiling next to the salon rear-view mirror, a niche for an umbrella in the driver’s door, separate pockets for smartphones in the backrests of the front seats, various hooks and niches for small items, as well as a net in the trunk with a load capacity of up to 3.5 kg.
In the European range of the fourth generation Škoda Fabia, only gasoline engines from the Evo series remain. This is a three-cylinder “aspirated” 1.0 MPI (65 or 80 hp), a “turbo-triple” 1.0 TSI (95 or 110 hp), as well as a “turbo-four” 1.5 TSI with 150 hp. with a system of the shutdown of two cylinders at low loads.
Three-cylinder engines up to 100 hp combined with 5-speed “mechanics”. Cars with a 110-horsepower engine can have a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DSG robot, while the 150-horsepower version is equipped with a DSG gearbox by default. The most powerful Škoda Fabia of the fourth generation accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 225 km / h.
The European start of sales of the fourth generation Škoda Fabia is scheduled for summer 2021. The timing of the appearance of the car in the station wagon has not yet been announced.
